Police, jails, State Excise, Transport, Ports and Tourism are the main
wings of Home Department. The department is  headed
by the Additional Chief Secretary(Home) .
Following main functions are performed by the Department:
- Accord administrative sanction to schemes to be implemented by field
agencies.
- Prepare annual budget for home department and field offices, seek
approval and monitor expenditure.
- Liaise with Government of India for funds for centrally sponsored
schemes.
- Frame policy decisions pertaining to law & order, prisons, excise,
transport, entertainment, crime against women etc.
- Appeals against Externment, Cinema,Hotel, Bar, Arms license etc.
- Process applications pertaining to Visa, Citizenship etc.
- Process cases pertaining to Prevention Detention viz. NSA Act 1980,
PBM Act 1980, MPDA Act 1981, COFEPOSA Act 1974 )
- Human Resource Development, Refresher training,Orientation courses,
training on specialized deciplines viz. handling of arms,ammunations,explosives
etc.
