Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj’s mother, Rajmata Jeejabai, was born at Sindkhedraja
in this division, which is endowed with dense forests. The Melghat forest
and its abundant wild life, the teakwood plantations as well as many medicinal
herbs are important features of this division. The hill station at Chikhaldara
is a major tourist attraction. Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj, Sant Gadge
Baba, blind Sant Gulabrao Maharj, agricultural pioneer Panjabrao Deshmukh
are some of the great names associated with Amravati division. Loknayak
Bapuji Aney launched his Jungal Satyagraha here. Shegaon of Shree Gajanan
Maharaj is known as Pandharpur of Vidarbha. The crater lake at Lonar is
declared as world heritage. The district is famous for its production and
marketing of top grade cotton.
