Nagpur
division occupies the geographical centre of India. Of the six “Zero
Miles” in British India, the central was at Nagpur. Thus, Nagpur remained
the capital of then Central Provinces. Poet Kalidasa composed the epic ‘Meghdoot’
at Ramtek, a famous place of pilgrimage and the seat of Sanskrit University,
the first of its kind in Maharashtra. The Bhoslas of Nagpur ruled Bengal,
marking an important chapter of history. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar heralded
a social revolution by administering Deeksha of Buddhism to lakhs of his
followers. He chose Nagpur, which is famous for its oranges. Mahatma Gandhi
and Acharya Vinoba Bhave selected this land to set up their ashrams. Nature
has liberally endowed this division with mineral wealth, forest produce
and water resources.
